Early detection increases oral cancer survival rates
Oral cancer affects the mouth, specifically the gums, palate, cheek linings, and floor of the mouth (under the tongue). While smoking and other tobacco use are the most obvious causes of oral cancer, other risk factors include human papillomavirus (HPV) and poor dental hygiene. Symptoms include sores, lumps, or ulcers in the mouth, including on the tongue or the inner cheeks or lips, as well as problems or pain when chewing or swallowing. Proper screening can help detect cancer cells early on, increasing the chances that treatment will be successful.
What is VELscope VX?
VELscope VX is a cutting-edge diagnostic tool that can indicate problem areas prior to the formation of visible signs of oral cancer. It works through tissue fluorescence—under the scope, healthy tissue glows bright green, while potentially pre-cancerous areas will appear darker. Used in conjunction with a proper oral exam, as well as other diagnostic technologies such as X-rays, VELscope VX can help detect oral cancer before symptoms emerge.
Why is oral cancer screening important?
Like most cancers, oral cancer can spread to other parts of the body, and like most cancers, it is fatal if not treated. Of course, the earlier oral cancer is found and treated, the higher the odds of survival, and the less invasive treatments are likely to be. College Manor Dental Centre has added oral cancer screening with VELscope VX to its repertoire of procedures in order to help our patients protect their smiles and their overall oral health.
