A healthy smile starts with healthy gums
The gums are the foundation of the mouth—if they’re not healthy, the effects can be felt in the teeth, jaw, tongue, and surrounding flesh of the mouth and throat. Periodontal, or gum, disease leads to bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, and loose teeth, which can be embarrassing as well as painful. Fortunately, there are a variety of gum therapies that can help.
What is gum therapy?
Gum or periodontal therapy is the treatment of gum diseases such as periodontitis or gingivitis. It may consist of medication, deep scaling or root planing, or even surgery, depending on the cause and extent of the gum disease. Your dentist may also recommend lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, brushing or flossing regularly, and getting regular checkups, as these can help prevent gum disease from forming or worsening.
How do I know if I need periodontal treatment?
If your gums are sore or tender, or if they bleed when you brush or floss, you may have the beginnings of gum disease and could need periodontal therapy. Only a dentist can properly diagnose gum disease and prescribe the appropriate therapy.
